In simple terms metadata is the data that describes your webpage for the search engines to display when someone searches fro your relevant keywords .
In the main we only refer to three pieces of metadata:
- Page Title
- Meta Description
- Meta Keywords
However in the main we tend to ignore the Meta Keywords and concentrate almost exclusively on the Page Title and Meta Description.
Why is Metadata Important?
Metadata is used by the search engines to help rank your site but more importantly it`s used as the text when a search result is displayed. Have a look at our Google Search Result for Flower Store In a Box:
The Purple Headline is take directly from the Page Title of the individual webpage, it`s sort of like the big Call to Action Marketing message, whilst the summary of the page is taken from your Meta Description. The summary is the validation to the user that they will find what they are looking for on your website.
Every page of your website should have a unique Page Title and Meta Description that describes your website and the specific content of that page.
You can have the same metadata for all pages that describes the overall purpose of your business or website, however this is not recommended and Google does penalise sites for this (however not as much as NOT having a page title and Meta Description).
Metadata looks like:
Each keyword or key phrase should be separated by a comma.
Page Title
Your Page Title should be no more than 70 characters long, any more than this and it will get truncated by Google so it gets lost. It`s the first thing that people will see when they are scanning search results so make it match what the user is looking for.
Meta Description
Your Meta Description should be no more than 155 characters long and should make sense and be a continuation of your page title. You should also avoid repetitive descriptions and make it highly relevant to the page you are describing.
