Card processing isn`t free, and this setting lets you pass some or all of that cost on to customers as a surcharge. Each payment gateway has its own surcharge setting, so you can set different percentages depending on how customers pay.
Important Australian stores
Credit card surcharging is no longer permitted for merchants in Australia. If your store operates in Australia, leave this setting switched off on every gateway. This setting remains available for stores operating outside Australia, where surcharging rules differ.
What you can do here
- Set a surcharge percentage for each payment gateway you use Stripe, Square, PayPal and eWay all have their own surcharge field.
- Apply different surcharge rates per gateway if your processing costs differ.
Step by step
- Go to Settings > Payment Options in your dashboard.
- Open the settings page for the gateway you want to update (Stripe, Square, PayPal or eWay).
- Enter your surcharge as a percentage, for example 2.5 for 2.5%.
- Save your settings.
Tips
- If you`re an Australian store, this should be switched off surcharging is no longer allowed here.
- If you operate outside Australia, check your local rules before setting a percentage many places only allow you to recover your actual processing cost, not a profit margin.
- Keep any surcharge clearly disclosed at checkout so customers aren`t surprised by the total.
